What the Supergoop Sunscreen Appearance Means in Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Espresso’ Video

Sabrina Carpenter has been making waves on the musical scene, especially over the past few months as an opener for the Taylor Swift Eras Tour. The ‘Nonsense’ singer, 24, is making headlines again with the release of her new single and music video, Espresso.

In the video, Carpenter is seen sunbathing in a retro summer scene. However, there was a refreshing take to this video we’re excited to see: sunscreen! Viral SPF beauty brand, Supergoop, makes several appearances, including one scene where a pool boy helps her reapply sunscreen. While we all don’t have a cabana boy to help us reapply sunscreen, the messages on sun safety are loud and clear.

Supergoop has established itself as a “cool” and trendy sunscreen brand over the past decade. The brand has 64 million TikTok views, according to Byrdie, and clearly resonates with a Gen Z audience. To further fortify this position, they’ve teamed up with Carpenter to promote their Glowscreen, Play Body Mist, and Glow Oil, all making a subtle yet deliberate appearance throughout the video. Chances are good you’ve either tried or heard of Glowscreen, this best-selling tinted sunscreen has over 3,000 five-star customer ratings.

Carpenter isn’t new to sharing her sun-safe beauty routine. In a 2022 interview with Glamour, she shared the following: “Sunscreen is super important to me. I wear sunscreen every single day. I started using Supergoop’s Glowscreen because I would find my face is always a little bit paler than the rest of my body, so it kind of is the best of both worlds: Obviously it’s SPF, but then it also gives you just a little bit of color that brings your skin to life. It’s under my makeup most of the time and it’s really nice. I really like how it looks.”

What does this mean for Gen Z and sun safety?

This means exciting things for Gen Z and sun safety. While this is clearly a Supergoop sponsorship, we’re not mad about it, especially after the news broke that Kristina Cavallari is anti-sunscreen. Carpenter is 24, whereas Cavallari is 37, clearly reflecting different sun-safe ideologies between Gen Z and older Millennials. For the skin cancer and melanoma community, we hope this reflects a larger shift in sun-safe practices as trendier sun-safety brands emerge on the scene.

For most of the younger sun-safety brands, there is an emphasis on continuing to do the things you love, just with healthier sun practices. It is this messaging that continues to be positively relayed to Gen Z women. And while the video isn’t perfect and starts with the opening credits quite literally tanned onto suntanned bodies, it is a step in the right direction.

Tips for Finding the Best SPF

There are so many great sun-safe products out there, so it is nearly impossible to find products that won’t work for you. Here are a few tips for finding the best SPF for your skin.

  • Broad Spectrum: Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against UVA and UVB rays

  • SPF 30+: Search for products with an SPF rating of 30 or higher

  • Sun-Protective Apparel: SPF alone often isn’t enough to keep you sun safe, it is also important to invest in UPF 50+ apparel and seek shade.
