Behind the Scenes: Sit Down with L.U.V. Founder

With countless orders and customers, a company can lose its way. Here at L.U.V., we always take the time to remember who we are and why we do what we do. Hear some personal insight from our CEO, Erica Sullivan, and find out what really started this movement.

Where Did it All Begin?

“I remember her call like it was yesterday because hearing the news the word cancer from one of my family members is one of my worst fears and greatest nightmares.”

In the winter of 2019, Erica Sullivan, Founder and CEO of Low Ultraviolet (L.U.V.), was met with life-changing news; her mom was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. Thanks to the work and treatment plan of skilled and hardworking doctors, and the power of early intervention, her mom is now in good health. Erica notes, “If my mom had not performed a skin check and been a strong advocate for her own health, she probably would have never realized cancerous spots were forming.”

This experience was a rude awakening about the reality of skin cancer. Due to her mom’s case, Erica knew the likelihood that she would be predisposed to skin cancer and ended up having two biopsies the week after her 21st birthday, both coming back atypical.

“I was shocked. I had absolutely no idea that someone in their early 20s had to worry about skin cancer.”

L.U.V. was created to ensure that young women take a proactive versus reactive approach to sun safety. By sharing her story, Erica hopes that others learn from her experience and spread awareness.

Why L.U.V.?

Right from the words of our CEO,

“My mom’s sobering experience with skin cancer triggered me into action. I began rapidly changing my sun safety practices and searched high and low for UPF clothing on the market that would seamlessly fit into my everyday life as a woman in her early 20s. I was frustrated by the lack of options on the market for safe, fashionable, and sustainable UPF 50+ clothing.”

Through discussions with friends, family, and in Facebook groups with early adopters, Erica learned that there was a huge gap in the market for a UPF apparel brand designed for younger adults.

“I was shocked when I learned about the lack of options on the market. L.U.V. is dedicated to providing UPF 50+ apparel so that skin cancer survivors and advocates can #outshineskincancer.”

What has it been like starting your first company?

Erica shares her appreciation for all the loyal customers and supporters who have been here since the beginning of the company.

“Our first launch day was like nothing I had ever experienced before. The minute we launched, a flood of orders came in from friends, family, early adopters, and mentors. I was so overwhelmed with gratitude it brought tears to my eyes. I packaged every order on launch day with excitement for what was to come from L.U.V.”

When you purchase any of the L.U.V. Low Ultraviolet products, you are not only helping spread our message, but you are guaranteeing a happy dance to be done by our founder upon your order.
