What is UPF and Why Does it Matter?

For many consumers, the Ultraviolet Protection Factor, or UPF for short, seems like a foreign concept, but here at L.U.V., our mission is to provide safe, fashionable, and sustainable sun protective apparel. UPF tells a consumer how much UV radiation a garment permits to reach your skin. UPF clothing is special because it protects you from rays that cause both premature aging (UVA radiation) and burns (UVB radiation).

How Does Fabric Make A Difference?

The Skin Cancer Foundation states:

“The composition of your fabric really matters. Unbleached cotton contains natural lignins that act as UV absorbers. Shiny polyesters and even lightweight satiny silks can be highly protective because they reflect radiation. High-tech fabrics treated with chemical UV absorbers or dyes prevent some penetration from UV rays.”

At L.U.V., we produce and bring to market only the best quality products for our customers. All L.U.V. apparel offers the maximum sun-protection rating of UPF 50+ while also being durable, lightweight, and comfortable. Our gaiters and wraps are designed for versatility and can be worn in multiple ways depending on your specific needs.

How Effective is UPF?

UPF protection is categorized into three different categories: Good UV protection, Very Good UV Protection, and Excellent UV protection as seen in the chart below:

When it comes to L.U.V. apparel, we do not compromise on bringing the best quality. All of our products are UPF 50+ with protection that does not diminish with wash or wear.

Benefits in Comparison to Sunscreen or Sunblock

There are many benefits to UPF clothing. When it comes to young children, all parents know the struggle of trying to apply sunscreen to a kid constantly on the go. UPF garments are a great choice to ensure they are protected and safe from harmful UV rays.

UPF 50+ apparel is also great for those who experience photosensitivity. Certain medications, medical conditions, and skincare products are often the leading cause of sun sensitivity. The Skin Cancer Foundation breaks down photosensitivity and what causes the response in this helpful article.

If you are athletic or adventurous, UPF gear offers protection from rays reflecting off of large bodies of water or snow. Our UPF 50+ Gaiters are designed specifically for athletic events such as hiking, walking, running, skiing, and more.

It is important to remember that whatever parts of the body that are not properly covered by UPF clothing, are not protected, and require suitable countermeasures to protect against UV rays. In most cases, sunblock or sunscreen are considered perfect complements to UPF gear because it allows people to protect their skin in the areas that are not covered. Teamwork makes the dream work!
